Like many people, you’ve probably wondered if you should leave a tip for your stylist at a spa or salon. Should you add a tip to your credit card or pay in cash? Does hair salon tipping etiquette call for leaving your tip with the receptionist or giving it to your stylist directly? How much should you tip?

Fortunately, there are guidelines for spa services tipping that can make tipping at the salon much simpler.

Hair Salon Tipping Etiquette

For services you receive at the hair salon, you should tip your stylist between 15 and 20 percent. If you’re not sure if you should tip in cash–or if you don’t have cash with you–most salons will allow you to add a tip to your credit card, or else will “cash out” the tip amount added to your bill so that you can tip your stylist in cash.

Each salon’s tipping guidelines are slightly different. If you’re not sure if you should tip your stylist directly or leave it at the front desk, don’t hesitate to ask. Some salons provide tip envelopes. Write both your name and the stylist’s name on the envelope, but not the amount it contains.

Spa Services Tipping

When you receive spa services, tipping guidelines are similar to hair salon tipping etiquette. Tip spa technicians between 15 and 20 percent of your bill. If you’ve received services from more than one technician, each should be tipped 15 to 20 percent of the cost of the services they provided. Guidelines for tipping in cash or by credit card are the same for spa services as for tipping at the salon.

Salon Tipping Guide: A Few Extras

Occasionally you may visit a salon or spa with a no tipping policy. In this case, a gratuity is incorporated into the cost of the spa’s services. This is a common practice at spas and salons in resorts and on cruise ships. It’s best not to try to tip stylists at “no tipping” salons. Doing so will put them in an uncomfortable position as they will likely have to decline your tip.

If you’ll be visiting a salon outside the United States, guidelines for spa services tipping will vary. Be sure to consult a salon tipping guide for the country you’ll be visiting before going to a salon or spa.
